A Timber Portal Frame Solution.
Ever since we decided that we want large open areas and openings in our domestic houses, we have typically used steel portal frames to achieve this. This has created the challenges of how to attach the remainder of the timber frame to the steel members.
Simpson Strong-Tie is proud to announce the release of the Portal Frame System (PFS) where standard LVL members are used to create the Portal in timber and is assembled and installed on site. Engineers in Australia have been looking for this solution for quite some time and now the wait is over.
The Portal Frame System uses two lengths of 240mm or 300mm x 45mm LVL, laminated together with structural SDW screws. The LVL is cross checked in the corners with screws and straps to give you the moment rigidity required in the corners. The system contains a unique hold down assembly to give us the rigidity and structural integrity to replace a steel portal in most applications.
The columns can be cut to length on site to suit all types of floor conditions. With a capacity of up to 5.8kN this is a real alternative to using steel portals above garage doors and large window openings.
