Plasterboard – An Excellent Lining For Wet Areas

by admin2

Use of plasterboard in wet area fit-outs can save time, effort and money on residential and commercial projects of any scale.

The long held myth that fibre cement board is superior to plasterboard is being challenged by the versatility of USG Boral wet area plasterboard products such as Wetstop™, FIRE WETSTOP™ and MultiStop™ by USG Boral.

Not only is plasterboard able to be scored and snapped without the need for power tools, which minimises exposure to dust on site, installation is also quick and easy using a collated screw gun. The use of plasterboard also reduces site wastage because off cuts can be used for other internal walls and ceiling applications due to the common thicknesses available (10mm and 13mm).

MultiStop, Wetstop and FIRE WETSTOP deliver the same tile weight capacity as most fibre cement boards, and feature a water-resistant core, making them an ideal interior lining solution for bathrooms, showers, laundries and toilets. The products’ high performance attributes in wet areas is due to the core formulation of the plasterboard, consisting of ingredients that exceed water resistant grade gypsum plasterboard standards AS/NZS 2588:1998, and the Deemed-to-Satisfy standards of the BCA and AS 3740:2010.

“There has been a misconception within the industry that plasterboard’s water resistance only applies to the exterior paper layer, and not throughout the product’s core. This thinking has inhibited the use of plasterboard for wet area installations. However, in Victoria, and to some extent Queensland and New South Wales, this is starting to change,” commented Chris Lubbers, USG Boral Category Manager, Internal Linings.

“Advances in waterproof membrane application, or tanking, now deliver greater protection to lining materials.

When combined with products such as USG Boral wet area plasterboard, builders and plasterers can be confident that each job will be completed to a high level of satisfaction and compliance.

“In many cases wet area plasterboard can improve installation time by up to 50 per cent for a standard residential bathroom when compared with fibre cement board projects. Installing USG Boral wet area plasterboard in an average size bathroom generally takes between one and one-and-a-half hours,” continued Lubbers.

“USG Boral wet area plasterboard solutions such as MultiStop, Wetstop and FIRE WETSTOP deliver projects with a smarter, lightweight and more affordable lining solution for small and large projects.”
