Brisbane-based Mahindra, fresh from the successful launch of XUV500 sports utility vehicle (SUV) in June 2012, is now launching the new 1.2t Genio Diesel Ute. The Genio is an important new model for Mahindra; it’s their first commercial vehicle designed from the outset as both a domestic and an export model range.
“We are very pleased to have this addition to our growing range in Australia,” commented National Manger of Mahindra Automotive Australia Pty Ltd (MAAPL), Mahesh Kaskar. Genio is the result of extensive worldwide research and was launched at the end of 2012 and exported to Europe, Africa, South and Central America, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
“What makes the Genio different from the competition is its 1260kg load capability and 2.7m tray. It is engineered to be as rugged and robust as all of Mahindra’s vehicles, including farm utes and mine spec vehicles,” said Russell Thiele, National Sales Manager, MAAPL.
Taking the ‘Hard’ Out of Hard Work
Mahindra sees the Genio as a versatile ute delivering the requirements of a workhorse ute and a recreational vehicle. It starts with a large tray to handle the work part of the equation, and goes through to optional four-wheel drive, using a Borg Warner transfer case to handle extreme off-road conditions, when it is used for recreational transport.
The Genio aims to take on the current mainstream players in the 1.2t pick-up market. It boasts a rated load capability of 1260kg. However, during its development phase it completed half of its test cycle carrying a load of 1.5t.
MAAPL has made sure the Genio is well equipped in terms of specifications against their rivals, as well as being keenly priced. These are vital requirements, as the Indian company’s local subsidiary seeks to use the Genio to substantially increase sales and market share in Australia.
Pricing for the new Genio Diesel starts at just $19,990 standard, with light truck tyres capable of handling the 1.2t payload and tray length of 2.7m. The 4×4 version is $2000 additional. The Genio is powered by the mHawk turbo diesel engine, developed jointly by Mahindra and Austrian diesel powertrain engineering specialists, AVL. The common rail power unit develops 88kW of power and 290Nm of torque. It is particularly good on fuel economy.
The Genio has a five-speed manual gearbox and uses independent suspension in front with coil springs, while a progressively rated multi leaf spring and double acting shock absorber suspends the live rear axle. Operator comfort includes the most spacious cabin in its class, ensuring driver and a short turning radius, allowing easy manoeuvrability with a long wheelbase for high speed stability. Other features include power steering, air conditioning, immobiliser, electric windows, two airbags, rear fog lamps, central locking, seat belt pre-tensioners, rear window demister and 74-litre fuel tanks.
The Genio represents a spacious and well-equipped vehicle that is both durable and reliable. A high level of equipment comes standard, including an audio system, cruise control, electrically adjustable exterior rear-view mirrors, ABS brakes, remote locking, steering wheel-mounted controls for the audio and information systems and the cruise control, seat belt and door ajar warning lights and front fog lamps.
Customers will be mainly city-based tradespeople and companies needing a spacious and hardworking city delivery vehicle.
All Mahindra Vehicles are backed by a 3-year/100,000km warranty and free roadside assistance for 3 years in Australia.
